Introduction

The Institute of Thematic Gender Studies aims at establishing national and international excellence in research as well as PhD- and Masters Programmes in thematic and post-disciplinary gender research. More than stimulating the production of new knowledges in the area of gender studies, the Institute also aims at increasing the amount of courses and seminars made available to students and researchers. In this way, the Institute contributes to the continuous strengthening of transdisciplinary gender research as a field of knowledge both within and outside of Sweden. Since the Institute was established in 2006 it has been the host of GEXcel.

GEXcel is one of three national centres of excellence in gender research, which are funded by the Swedish Research Council with the aim to facilitate the establishment of strong research environments. The Institute is involved also in the research school InterGender, and it continuously collaborates with the gender research excellence centres in Uppsala and Umeå.
